How to Make Walking Both Fun and Effective

By Genevieve Cunningham

More and more people are coming to realize the benefit of walking. For some, it seems too good to be true. Walking is easy, right? How can it possibly improve fitness? But it can and it does! Of course, you'll only get out of walking what you put into it. If you want walking to be effective, you have to put in the work. Luckily, it's possible to make walking both effective and fun at the same time. If you're looking to create an effective walking routine in your life, take a look at these tips for bringing a little challenge and a little fun to your practice.

Get a Playlist

A playlist makes everything better. Whether you're listening to your favorite music, catching up on your favorite podcast, or listening to an audio book, listening to a playlist makes your walking routine more engaging. This is especially helpful for those who find walking a bit boring. Instead of fighting the boredom and trudging through your routine, pop in some headphones and let yourself zone out. This one simple step can make a huge difference in how you feel about your workout, so get started on a playlist that you can use with your next stroll.

Get a Buddy

For some people, the best approach is to get a walking buddy. A friend, parent, sibling, or even a beloved pet can help take the monotony out of the walk. You can chat, exchange stories, or simply encourage each other. You might simply enjoy the company. Instead of dreading the daily walk, you can look forward to it as a time to catch up with loved ones. If this sounds appealing, find someone who is willing to stick to the routine with you, and you can help each other change for the better.

Get Outside

Many people make the mistake of trying to walk on a treadmill or in a gym. While this can certainly work, it tends to become tedious really quickly. To keep it interesting, go outside. Find a trail, an outdoor track, or a path at a local park. Walking outside gives you beautiful sights, various sounds, and the feel of the warm sun or cool breeze. In short, it's a sensory experience! Take your walk outdoors and you'll be gaining multiple benefits at the same time.

Walking is a great exercise. It has everything you need -- it's gentle, low-impact, and can last a lifetime! But if you're not deliberate about your walking practice, it's easy to get bored and give it up. Use these tips to make walking fun and effective so that you can stay fit and healthy for the rest of your life.
