Are You Preparing Your Health for the Future?

By Genevieve Cunningham

From the time that we're small, we hear a lot about planning for the future. We get asked about college and careers and future relationships. And then we get bombarded with information about how to end up with a future we're proud to live and experience. But there's still one area that gets very little attention -- and it might be the most important of all! What is it? Our health! If we don't have good health, we can't really enjoy everything else. Luckily, there are simple ways to prepare your health for a bright future. If you would like to include good health in your future plans, take a look at these tips to start today.

Take a Good Long Look at Diet

We don't want to do it. We want to ignore our diets and pretend the problem is something else. Why? Because we get so comfortable with what we eat. We don't want to change because altering our diets is hard! But it's also one of the most important aspects of long-term health. Diets that are heavy in animal product and sugar raise the risk of heart disease and diabetes -- two health issues that tend to show up even more as we get older. If you want your health to last long into the future, you have to eat a diet of healthy foods starting right now and lasting for the rest of your life.

Assess Your Movement

Most of us think we move a lot more than we actually do. If we put a number on it -- something like calories burned -- we'd quickly see that we're not moving even a fraction of what we think. Movement is key to long-term health. It's good for weight management, pain management, strength, flexibility, and multiple other areas of our daily health. Are you moving enough? Do you move on purpose? Do you exercise? Assess your own movement, add exercise where needed, and you'll likely see your health improve a little bit every day.

Stop Avoiding the Doctor

Everyone avoids the doctor. Besides being expensive for many, we also feel that it's unnecessary. Why see the doctor if you're not sick, right? But we should be seeing the doctor on a regular basis. We should be getting yearly checkups, even into adulthood. Keeping up with checkups allows the doctor to assess our health regularly, watch for potential problems, and keep us on the right track for better health long-term.

Preparing for the future is so important. It helps us set up life the way we want it. It helps us save money, get the right job, plan for a family, and do so many other things. But if we don't plan for good health, we won't be able to enjoy it. Use these tips to plan for a healthy future, and enjoy each year -- and each day! -- as it comes and goes.
