Turning Trail Mix Into Your Go-To Snack
By Brandi Goodman
Not all trail mixes are made the same. In fact, many store-bought versions contain some unhealthy ingredients and are higher than necessary in calories and sugar. You can still turn trail mix into your go-to snack. You just need to be sure you're making a homemade version with the right things included.
Choose a Healthy Nut
Nuts are often considered a healthy snack. Just be careful of the amount consumed. They're also higher in fat than you might think -- and also higher in calories. Choose one of the healthier nut options for your trail mix to help keep the calorie content as low as possible. Walnuts, almonds, and pecans are some of the best options. They're considered heart-healthy because of the antioxidants and fiber content. They're also high in protein.
Opt for Unsweetened Dried Fruit
Dried fruit is a great combination with nuts. You need to be sure it's the unsweetened version, though. Many dried fruit options found in the store taste so great because they're loaded with sugar. Dry out your own fruits at home using the oven. Bananas, cherries, apples, peaches, and more can be dried into the perfect snacking option.
Use Dark Chocolate
The candy combinations found in stores are not the trail mix you should be eating. However, you can sweeten up your snack by adding in some dark chocolate. Dark chocolate actually provides some antioxidants and is considered a healthy snack option. You need to get a 70 percent or higher cocoa bar to get the right effects. Slice it up and disperse some throughout your trail mix bags.
Consider Some Add-Ins
You can create numerous versions of this snack. Consider your add-ins for each bag for a unique option every time. Coconut flakes can be put into one. Use pumpkin or sunflower seeds in another. Mini pretzel sticks or popcorn pieces are also good choices. Create any type of trail mix snack you desire using a little imagination. If it's a healthy option for the on-the-go, it can be added to your mix.
National Trail Mix Day arrives at the end of August. Now's the time to start figuring out just how to make the right concoction for a healthy snack. You can bag it up and take it on the go for a nutritious and easy snack that can be enjoyed anywhere at any time.
