Quick Fixes to Squelch a Slouch and Lose the Pain

By Sandy Schroeder

Bad posture can make your back hurt and your neck stiffen. But most of us ignore our posture, until pain hits. To learn more about your posture, focus on lining up your body head to toe.  Use quick fixes in strategic spots like these from

While Standing

Check yourself in a three-way mirror. Look for a forward head position, protruding abdomen, or hunched shoulders. Line up ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles to look and feel better.

At Your Computer

  • Use a chair that supports your shoulder blades and lower back.
  • Keep your computer monitor at eye level and your feet flat on the floor.
  • Take five-minute breaks every hour throughout the day to walk, stand or stretch.

While Driving

  • Sit close to the wheel to avoid stretching the legs.
  • Keep knees level with hips, seat at a 90-degree angle.

While Sleeping

  • To protect your spine, use a pillow under the knees if you sleep on your back; keep one between your knees if you sleep on your side.
  • Make sure your mattress is medium firm with no lumpiness.

Toting a Purse

  • Switch shoulders daily. The shoulder carrying the bag lifts, throwing the spine off.
  • Divide heavy loads. Carry a bag on each shoulder.

Wearing Heels

  • Keep ears, shoulders and hips aligned.
  • Never walk more than a couple of blocks.
  • Walk on the whole foot, not just the ball.

Seeing Your Chiropractor
