Boost Your Happiness With Handy Tricks
By Genevieve Smith
Happiness can move in and out of our lives, even weaving in and out through a day. Could we boost our efficiency and find tactics to rewire our thinking and short cut to happiness more reliably? These techniques have been curated from various authors in an attempt to organize our lives in favor of joy.
Pinpoint a Fear Friend - There are those life events or even daily hiccups that strike the fear of the unknown into your heart. By turning to a specific friend, you may be able to get through these hurdles and move on quicker, finding yourself swiftly accomplished and refreshed. Sift through your friends to find the one who is supportive yet not controlling, a listener but not a teller.
Categorize Failures - Failure is a part of life, and so is the voice inside our heads that panic when we partake in it. Place your failures into categories to deal with them. There are screwups (mistakes that you normally get right), weaknesses (mistakes that you make again and again), and growth opportunities (failures that did not need to happen). Apologize for screwups, avoid triggers for weaknesses, and tune in to growth opportunities.
Change Your Vocabulary - “Like,” “love,” and “hate” are words with easy visceral reactions. Banish them from your vocab and practice elaborating, over the course of three sentences, what your reaction to something or somebody is. You may find it revelatory and that you develop more complex and rewarding reactions to your surroundings.
Filter Out Distracting Communications - It may seem scary not to reply to every text, email, comment, or message right away, but all these interactions can pull at our focus and drag down the day. Reply to urgent things more quickly, and create a rule for the rest. Non-urgent messages can be taken care of at a point in the day you set aside for such, and for those things you wish not to engage with at all, create a list of automatic responses to send out in response. Remember that everyone is trying to tackle a pile of virtual communications, and others will understand when you value your time and create a system for sorting through it all.
Happiness is one of many emotions we are equipped to experience. It is a beautiful thing that one can feel such a range of things, and that’s something I personally don’t resent. Yet, when it is specifically happiness that you are in the mood for, try these techniques to reset your thinking and provide the support for a swifter road to revitalization.
