6 Tips to Eliminate Back-to-School Blues

By Virginia Laird

The thought of getting back to the classroom can be depressing for both students and teachers. Many people reach out for help with light depression as they get back into routine. This is commonly referred to as the back-to-school blues. There are ways to help eliminate these feelings, including:

  • Get a new outfit
  • Get back in routine
  • Make a list
  • Take advantage of downtime
  • Eat a good breakfast
  • Make sleep a priority

Get a New Outfit

Getting excited about a new outfit for the first day of school can help any student get excited about school.

Get Back in Routine

After almost three months of little to no routine, it can be difficult to get back in the swing of going to bed at a decent hour and getting up before noon. However, getting the back-to-school routine started weeks prior to the first day can help students have more energy and drive to get school work done.

Make a List

Parents who may be trying to help their student get excited about heading back to class should help their student make a list of all the things that might be exciting about the new year. It should include social events, non-school activities that may take place during the year, as well as any other school related items that may be exciting.

Eat a Good Breakfast

Breakfast has long been determined to be the most important meal of the day. Eating a balanced meal can help get the metabolism moving. This meal can also help provide energy to the body to get the brain functioning.

Take Advantage of Downtime

Although it can be very tempting to socialize when the teacher gives a few extra free minutes at the end of the class period, it can be a lifesaver to use this time more wisely. Doing even a few minutes of homework can save students from taking the work home.

Make Sleep a Priority

Getting enough sleep can help in many ways. It can help keep the body going and assist in maintaining a clear and focused mind. The National Sleep Foundation offers recommended number of hours of sleep for each age group. Help your student make sure to get enough sleep.

Applying just a few of these tips can help eliminate the back-to-school blues. Here is hoping your student has the best school year ever!
