Benefits of Boxing for the Mind and Body

By Brandi Swieter

Many people see boxing as a contact sport that is better left to professionals. What they fail to realize is that boxing is actually highly beneficial. It doesn’t have to be between two people either. Individuals can learn boxing techniques and training methods and just use a punching bag to get in a good workout. Boxing brings many benefits for both the mind and body.

Relieves Stress

Boxing is a great way to relieve stress. Those who have too much on their minds or may even be feeling angry can take up boxing in an effort to rid themselves of all the weight on their shoulders. Boxing classes are a great place to start, but even setting up a punching bag in a home gym will help.

Improves Strength

Anyone hoping to gain strength, especially in their arms, can do so with boxing. The constant motion of punching or boxing quickly develops the arm muscles. Stronger arms mean more strength overall. With plenty of muscles in this area, people should be able to lift more and build up their endurance easily. The entire upper body can see an increase in strength and size, not just the arms. The shoulders and upper back will get a good workout as well during the routine.

Burns Calories

With all of the movement and vigorous activity that boxing can sometimes cause, people are sure to burn calories. It’s possible to burn more than 60 calories after just 10 minutes of punching a bag. The longer a person goes and the more they punch, the more calories they’ll be burning. This can easily lead to weight loss, which is the goal for many trying out a fitness boxing class.

Reducing Blood Pressure

An increase in blood pressure can lead to mental health issues, such as feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Reducing blood pressure is possible through boxing since the activity gets the heart pumping and beating intensely. It lowers the risk for heart disease and and strengthens the heart. With a healthier heart, people are able to take on more physical activities to continue their increase in fitness.

Boxing creates an ideal workout for anyone hoping to improve strength and endurance while simultaneously relieving stress. It helps people get a lot off of their minds while helping them build up their muscle mass. Anyone interested in boxing should not only get a home punching bag to try, but also look into joining a fitness boxing class that will really have participants working up a sweat.
