5 Family Fitness Activities to Do Outdoors
By Brandi Swieter
Once springtime hits, many families start looking to get in some fitness time in the fresh air. A lot of people stay cooped up inside during colder weather and are more than a little eager to head back outside once the warm air hits. With at least five family fitness activities to do outdoors, anyone looking to get out and about for some fun and exercise can do just that.
Fly a Kite
Flying a kite may seem like an easy feat, but it can actually be quite the workout. People often spend time running around to keep up with how fast the kite flies away, especially if it’s a rather windy that day. Grab a kite for each member of the family and head out for some fun times watching them soar.
Create a Scavenger Hunt
An outdoor scavenger hunt is a great way to get the kids involved in family time and make sure they exercise. Hide plenty of objects around the yard or even at a large park so that the children spend awhile running around searching for the hidden treasures they have to find. Parents also get in a workout after spending so long walking around trying to find the perfect place to hide these gems.
Go on a Family Bike Ride
Spring weather is great for enjoying a bike ride. Get each person on their own and go out for a family bike ride around the area. You can even pack a picnic to take along and stop to enjoy it at a nearby park. Everyone will get plenty of exercise by biking there and back.
Garden Together
Gardening takes a lot more work than one might think. With all the transporting of heavy materials, walking from the garage or shed to the garden area, raking up the dirt, and using other gardening tools, the body gets in a better workout than people realize. Get the kids in the garden alongside you so the whole family can plant things together while getting in some exercise while enjoying the fresh air.
Take a Hike
A hike through a forest lets kids become little explorers. They can stop to see all sorts of interesting things while also getting the exercise their bodies need. Make a day of it and take a hike as a family. Be sure to pack plenty of water so everyone stays hydrated.
It’s beneficial to teach young children about the importance of fitness. By doing family fitness activities together indoors or out, parents are showing kids what it can look like to be fit and healthy. Start doing more family-related activities this spring and continue on throughout the year for a healthier household.
