Eat More Eggs During Egg Month (And After)

By Brandi Goodman

May is National Egg Month. Start sorting out your best egg recipes and prepare to celebrate with different versions all month long. You should add eggs to your regular menu even after the month is over because of the many health benefits they bring. With lots of protein and many delicious options to enjoy, eggs are a great addition to any weekly meal plan.

Good Source of Protein

Protein is essential to health. You need it for repairing tissues and building new cells as well as proper growth. Eggs are a good source of protein. Just one large egg contains 6 grams. Eat a few and you'll feel full and well.

B Vitamins

Eggs provide several versions of the B vitamin. Vitamin B2, B12, and B6 are all plentiful in eggs. These vitamins work to provide energy to the body. Vitamin B12 is necessary for keeping blood and other cells healthy. Vitamin B6 is essential for the nervous system and producing certain neurotransmitters.

Vitamin D

Many people believe the yolk should be avoided because it has too much cholesterol. If you already suffer from high cholesterol, then this might be true. Otherwise, it is perfectly safe to eat both the egg white and the egg yolk. In fact, much of the nutrition is provided in the yolk. This is where most of the Vitamin D is found. Vitamin D is essential for absorbing calcium and helping the bones to grow.

Selenium

Eggs provide about 22 percent of your daily intake of selenium. This nutrient is necessary for cognitive function. It can also help with fertility. A diet rich in selenium may prevent early cognitive decline as well as prevent certain thyroid disorders.

Egg Options

Get these benefits from all of the egg options you have. Enjoy hard boiled eggs as a snack. Try a sunny side up egg or some scrambled on a plate for breakfast. You can eat an egg sandwich on whole grain bread for a healthy lunch. Steak and eggs over potatoes makes a tasty dinner. There are so many egg options that you can enjoy which will provide plenty of benefits as well as keep you feeling full thanks to all the protein.

Nutrition should always be at the forefront of your mind. Choosing healthier options goes a long way toward improving your overall health and well-being. Eggs are an excellent option for any meal of the day and bring lots of benefits to the table.
