Staying Fit in Summer: A Quick How-To
By Genevieve Cunningham
It’s the dead of summer, and it is ridiculously hot. Because of the extreme heat and humidity, staying in shape during this time of year is tough! Unless you’re in an air conditioned gym all the time, it’s a challenge to workout amongst the rising temperatures. If you’d like to stay fit despite the hot temps, check out this quick how-to for staying fit all summer long.
Great Summer Activities
Some workouts are better in the summer than they are any other time of the year. A few of those activities might include:
-
Swimming - This is an awesome summer activity! Swimming keeps you cool while also building muscle, expanding lung strength, and burning calories. Find a pool and take a dip!
-
Hiking - Yes, it’s hot, but hiking is a fun summer activity. Just make sure that you dress correctly and that you bring lots of water. Go slowly and enjoy the hike. You’ll still burn plenty of calories with the heat and walking combined.
-
Cycling - Riding a bicycle is excellent for summer. It helps create a breeze, which then helps you to stay a little bit cooler. It’s also a great way to work the bottom half of your body, toning the legs and glutes like never before.
Other Tips for Summer Workouts
If you don’t enjoy the above activities, there are some ways to keep your summer workouts tolerable. Some of those tips include:
-
Bring Water - You really need plenty of water. Try not to gulp, and instead take little sips all throughout your workout. This prevents both dehydration as well as tummy aches that can come from gulping.
-
Dress Light - Now is not the time for sweatpants or hoodies. Just don’t do it. Shorts, tank tops, or light clothing are the way to go for summer. It’s also important to remember your sunscreen if you plan on working out outside.
-
Join a Gym - Even if you don’t normally work out in a gym, the summer might be a good time to give it a try. Many gyms will let you pay month to month or offer promotions at different times of the year. Find one with these benefits and work out under the air conditioner instead of the brutal temps.
Staying fit in the summer is definitely a challenge, but it’s not impossible. Take precautions, get prepared, and make smart decisions. Soon, the fall winds will blow in and your body will be ready for the break. Use these tips to give you a smart headstart to all things fitness related this summer.
