How to Beat Afternoon Exhaustion
By Genevieve Cunningham
You've just had lunch and you're back in your office. You're staring at the computer screen in front of you, and you're trying with all your might to complete a project before the end of the day. Unfortunately, your eyes just won't cooperate! The more you try to focus, the heavier your eyelids get. Sound familiar? Most people are familiar with the post-lunch slump! This is one of the toughest times of the day, and if you want to get through it with more energy and focus, take a look at these tips to add to your routine.
Take a Power Nap
Naps are so good. We give them up when we're kids, but why? Naps help us feel refreshed and ready to go! It can improve focus and concentration, and it can give us quite a boost in energy. The key is to make it a true power nap. How? Don't sleep for any longer than 30 minutes. If you allow yourself to go into a deep sleep, you'll be groggy. But a quick rest can invigorate you and keep you going for the rest of the day.
Eat a Healthy Snack
Since food is fuel, it makes sense that a healthy snack can revamp your energy. Just make sure it's the right kind of snack. Don't reach for a candy bar or sweet treat. Though you'll certainly experience a sugar high, you'll also experience the crash later. Instead, choose a veggie or a fruit. Even better, a snack with protein -- maybe a boiled egg or a handful of nuts -- can really give you a boost that lasts the remainder of the afternoon. Plan ahead by keeping these snacks at work or in your car.
Move
When you're feeling sleepy, the worst thing you can do is sit down and be still. Instead, get up and move. If you need to read something, print it out and walk around the block while you read. If you need to stay in your office, get up and do some squats, lunges, or simply pace the floor. Movement gives us a natural high. If you can make this happen during your day, it's one of the best ways to keep motivation and focus high.
The midday slump is hard to beat, but it's definitely possible. Use these tips to give yourself a head start. It might take time and some experimenting, but getting a plan ready for this time of day can help you power through and be more productive every day.
