4 Ways to Get Protein Without More Meat

By Genevieve Cunningham

Protein is a necessary nutrient that simply must be in our diets. The most obvious way to get protein is through the consumption of meat. Whether it's ground beef, chicken, pork, or wild game, meat gives the body a blast of protein. Of course, we know that meat can bring some disadvantages as well -- things like higher cholesterol and a higher risk of heart disease. It's possible that you're actually looking to eat a little less meat moving forward. If you're ready to consume more protein without more meat, these options may be the perfect place to begin.

Dark Leafy Greens

Dark leafy greens certainly aren't our first thought when we think of protein, but if you eat the right kind -- especially spinach -- you can get a blast of protein in a salad. While the amount you'll have to eat probably means you'll need other sources of protein as well, consuming dark leafy greens can help provide protein and fiber, help you lose weight, and raise the overall nutritional content of your diet.

Nuts

Nuts are easy because you can grab and go. They're an excellent choice when you need a small snack with a bit of protein. To go along with the protein punch, they'll also provide your body with healthy fats that are necessary for good health. Choose almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts. It doesn't matter what kind as long as you eat in moderation and know the nutritional content of each nut before consumption.

Protein Powder

If you just want to get straight to the point, consider opting for a protein powder. You'll buy it in a large container, and then add it to various dishes or homemade shakes with a small scoop. Protein powder also works great before or after workouts, and can enhance the results you're after when trying to change your body for the better.

Beans

Beans are a great meat alternative. They contain both protein and fiber, which means they'll give you a nutritional blast while also making you feel full. Luckily, there are so many different kinds of beans to choose from. There are enough to meet the flavor demands of everyone. Add beans as a side dish or as the main course, and you'll get your does of protein without ever touching a meat product.

Protein is definitely important. We have to eat it in the right amounts. It helps muscle growth and weight loss and proper body function. Luckily, we don't have to eat more meat to get it done. Use these options to improve your protein consumption, and you'll build better health in the process.
