Use Video Games to Ease Stress

By Brandi Goodman

Video games have long been called the reason for violent outbursts and problems among today's youth. Although there are some problematic games out there, many are much more beneficial than people realize. Some games are great for taking you out of this world and putting you into a new one. It can help you escape from reality for a little while and ease some of the stresses of your daily life.

Challenge and Reward

A difficult game that's challenging can give your mind a lot to focus on. After you've accomplished your challenge, you're typically rewarded with new gear, unlocked missions, extra money, or points. A challenge and reward system is great for the mind. You know you'll be rewarded for your efforts soon, so it makes you want to push on and do your best so you can receive it. It can give you a sense of pride and accomplishment when you've succeeded.

Playing Together

Spending time with another person is one option for stress relief. Play a game together within that time and see how well it can help you bond. You'll get to have fun enjoying each other's company and relieving stress together. Play as a team so you get to work together or play against one another for some healthy competition.

Joining a Gaming Community

Just like any other activity, you can find like-minded people who enjoy what you do. Join a gaming community and you make life-long connections with new friends. You can talk about your favorite games and why you love them. You can play together using online video games. You may even choose to meet up with some and make face-to-face connections. A gaming community of other games like you can bring a sense of companionship to your life. You may experience less stress because of it.

Finding Something You Enjoy

Finding something that you enjoy also eases stress. No matter if it's gaming or any other activity, you're engaging in something that makes you happy and feel good. If you realize a game is too difficult, or you're getting angry at it, then it's not the right one for you. You need to find a game that you actually like playing and continue to do so without getting upset. The goal is stress relief. You don't want a game that adds to the tension you're feeling.

Video Game Day arrives on September 12. Take the time to try out a game and see how much it can help you relax, reduce your stress, and feel at ease. You may just have a new hobby that you can continue anytime you're wanting to alleviate some tension.
