Don't Buy These Packaged Foods, Make Your Own

By Sara Butler

If you’re going to dedicate yourself to being healthier in the new year, then you need to try to get pre-packaged foods out of your life. Pre-packaged foods are often highly processed, and highly processed foods are generally acknowledged to be bad for you. Sure, they’re convenient, but that convenience is at the expense of your health and well-being. Here are some foods you may want to keep out of your kitchen in the year to come.

Crackers

Crackers are actually really easy to make yourself at home – without all the preservatives and the ingredients you can’t pronounce. All you need to make some for yourself is some olive oil, water, flour, and a little determination. Plus, you can get creative and make your own custom crackers as you get used to the simplicity of the recipe. You’ll wow your friends and neighbors who have probably never had a homemade cracker!

Chips

Chips aren’t great for you, and the kind you buy in the store have so much fat and salt that they’re a ticking time bomb for your health. You can easily make your own chips from potatoes, sweet potatoes, or corn tortillas. Bake them in the oven after slicing the vegetables thin and you’ll not only save your health but your bank account too! You can also cook them in your microwave easily if you’re short on time!

Corn Tortillas

Speaking of corn tortillas, making your own is easier than you think! The only thing you need to spend time tracking down is a special form of ground corn soaked in lime called masa harina. Try your hand at making your own tortillas and you’ll never want to go back to the store-bought kind ever again!

Mayonnaise or Salad Dressing

You never know what’s in those giant bottles of mayo and salad dressing you buy at the store, so why not make your own? All you have to do in order to literally whip up your own mayo is take oil and mix it with egg yolks. Once you’ve mastered the mayo, try your hand at your own salad dressings. That way you’ll know what exactly is in what you’re serving to your family.

All of the things listed here might seem like they’d be complicated to make yourself, but they’re really not. Try it once and see what you think and how they make you feel! Chances are, once you go to homemade products you’ll never want the pre-packaged stuff again anyway!
