Don't Believe These Health Myths
By Genevieve Cunningham
There is so much information out there about health. We are bombarded with advice from every angle. And honestly, there's so much information that it can be hard to decipher fact from fiction. Not all advice is good advice! If you're on a fitness quest and need help knowing the truth about the advice you've been given, take a look at these three myths to ignore and what to do instead.
It Has to Hurt
It doesn't have to hurt. No pain, no gain -- you've definitely heard this. But it should probably say no challenge, no gain instead. You do have to challenge yourself because that's how the body changes. But it doesn't actually have to involve pain. In fact, if true pain is involved, you need to stop and make sure you're not causing injury. The bottom line? Challenge: Yes! Pain: No!
Your Body is Just Made This Way
How many times have you heard someone say that they can't lose weight because their body is just made that way? This is a common misconception. The truth is that your body can and will change with the proper training and diet. It's definitely true that not all bodies are created the same -- so everyone will look different. But most of the time, your body can definitely change, even if it's not exactly how you pictured. Don't mistake a challenge for an impossibility. Get determined and get healthy.
This Bite Won't Hurt Anything
It's important to factor in cheat days or meals. These keep us sane. But so many people snack their way to being overweight. They think that this one bite of chocolate won't hurt. Or this one small package of chips will be OK. If you're perfect on your diet, then that's probably true: It won't hurt. Unfortunately, we take this one little bite all day long! And before we know it, we've added hundreds of calories to our diets. Stick to the plan! The more you do this, the more this statement becomes true.
Research and advice are good things to have when it comes to getting fit. But you have to discern the information. Determine what is good, what is bad, and what's completely useless. Use the advice that moves you forward and forget about the rest. With this approach, you'll be well on your way to better health in no time at all.
