It's Allergy Season, so Be Prepared
By Stephen R. Farris
No matter where you may live in the United States, you're more than likely to be allergic to something. It could be pollen from certain trees or flowers, or even from your pet at home. Allergies can be associated with different foods we consume.
If you love being outdoors, then you're probably subject to coming down with an allergy attack either in the fall or early spring seasons. However, you can't rule out late summer either.
So what are some of the symptoms of seasonal allergies? Usually you'll have one or more of the following symptoms:
- Sneezing
- Coughing
- Scratchy throat
- Runny nose
- Nasal congestion
- Watery eyes
Seasonal allergies don't usually have a long shelf life. Maybe about two to three weeks, but it can be excruciating and inconvenient.
Most seasonal allergies can actually be prevented, but you have to catch them quickly. If you know certain pollens begin to increase, then you probably should use some type of covering -- if outdoors -- such as a mask covering your nose and mouth. Also, when being outdoors for lengthy periods, always dust off your clothes before going back indoors and washing your face, neck, arms, or any exposed body parts, including your hair.
You can also use saline solution to keep your nasal passages cleaned out, which can reduce a lot of the effects from allergies, or even prevent you from coming down with them. You can also visit your physician to see about getting an allergy shot. There are several over-the-counter medications that can help relieve allergy symptoms.
