Creating Healthy Memories During Spring Break
By Donna Stark
Spring Break isn't just for college students. Many elementary, middle, and high school students are also out for one or two weeks during March and that usually means it is time for a family vacation! And whether it's at Disney, the beach, or the ski slopes, most parents want to use this time to make amazing memories for their family. It is important though, that the right kind of memories are made, and by that, I mean memories where everyone is safe, healthy, and happy! So if you are planning a glorious trip in the coming weeks, take a look at the following tips that will help you create the best ones yet!
Plan for Success
There is a lot to consider when planning a trip, especially one that takes you far away from home. If you are going overseas, do you need any special vaccinations? If you take daily medications, do you have enough to last until you get back home? Are there any special needs for anyone in the family that need to be addressed? These are just a few of the questions that you need to ask so that you don't have any unplanned emergencies.
Stay Active
School, work, and home. More than likely, you and your family have been spending hours each day sitting at these places, so take the opportunity over break to stay active! No matter where you go, there are sure to be a variety of activities that will keep you and your loved ones moving and grooving on the path to optimal health and fitness.
Protect Yourself
Some vacations are relaxing while others are filled with fun adventures, but no matter which type you are going on this year, you need to stay safe. Here are some great suggestions to follow.
- Stay together and avoid being alone in unfamiliar areas
- Always wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15 (and don't fall asleep on the beach before putting it on!)
- Use the appropriate safety gear for each new adventure (helmets, goggles, life vests, etc.)
- Make sure you are familiar with new equipment before using (snowmobiles, boats, scooters, etc.)
- Let others know where you go and when you plan on returning
Eat Healthy
Having fun sure does take a lot of energy and fuel, so be sure to consume a healthy diet while away from home. Either cook or order meals that contain a variety of nutrient-dense foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and heart-healthy fats. Also, be sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water each day.
Happy, Healthy Memories
Creating memories during vacations is easy. The hard part is planning and preparing for everyone's safety. But when you all come back home smiling and in one piece, you will feel comforted in the fact that all of your time and effort to do so was worth it!
