Less Technology, More Quality
By Donna Stark
Do you hold your phone more often than you hold the hand of someone you love? Do you remember the good old days when, at the end of the day, work was actually left at work? The dependence we have on our electronic devices is causing major disconnects with those around us and sadly, it is becoming harder and harder to distinguish our work lives from our personal ones. We need to break ourselves of the bad habit we have fallen into and get back to what life is really about. Health, happiness, and time with family. Here are some suggestions on how to start living an enriched life without the need for a gadget in your hand.
Designate an Electronic Device Spot in Your Home
It's time to sit down with the family and come up with a suitable plan for a technology detox. You can start by designating a location in your home where all the devices will be held during or after a certain time. This can be a box, a basket, or a spot on top of the table ... it doesn't make a difference, just be sure to place the items out of sight. This is a great way to reduce distractions and establish definite boundaries.
Engage in Conversation (Remember What That Is?)
From the day everyone just had to future dreams to pet peeves to the weather, there is always something to talk about. And now that the most distracting item is put away, there's no reason not to! Engaging in real-life conversations, and not text messages, with your loved ones is a treat and should be enjoyed every possible chance you get!
Pull the Games, Art, or Baking Supplies Out
Whether it means a quick game of Memory, some quiet time to paint, or some laughter and fun in the kitchen, the key idea here is to get the entire family engaged in the present moment. Creating those fun moments doesn't take much, but it will help nurture and strengthen the relationships in your family. On top of that, it might also give you some extra hands in the kitchen while you are cooking dinner, and that is an amazing feat in itself!
Say Goodbye to Inanimate Objects and Hello to Loved Ones
Once you can achieve more balance in your life, you may be able to find other ways in which your time can be used more wisely. Remember, it's all about your quality of life. Are you willing to hand that over to your phone?
