Nutrition Yeast Has Health Benefits

By Paul Rothbart

Most people are familiar with the kind of yeast used in baking to make bread rise. It can also be used to make yogurt and beer. This is another kind known as nutritional yeast, sometimes called nooch. It's usually made with a combination of beet molasses and sugar and is inactive. It's a common ingredient in vegan dishes because it's yellow with a creamy texture and can make a good cheese substitute. Nutritional yeast doesn't ferment and can't make dough rise, but it is loaded with nutrients and has several health benefits.

It Has Protein

Outside of meats, poultry, and fish, there aren't that many foods that provide significant amounts of protein. One of the best of these sources is nooch. It contains most of the essential amino acids that the body needs to produce protein. Protein builds muscle, repairs damaged tissue and is also good for skin and bone health. Nutritional yeast provides protein without fat, great for those seeking to lose weight.

It Fights Viruses

Nutritional yeast has been shown to fight viruses and bacteria. It is particularly effective in combating salmonella and E. Coli. It's outstanding in treating candida as it is not active and doesn't contribute to the condition. In fact, German physicians often prescribe nooch as a natural, herbal, antiviral.

It Can Help the Immune System

Nooch contains large amounts of glutathione, beta-1,3 glucan, and trehalose. Research has found that these compounds can all boost immunity. A study of marathoners found that those who ate nutritional yeast before a race showed better endurance and higher levels of general health after running.

It's Good for Your Skin and Hair

Nutritional yeast contains most of the B vitamins. Vitamin B5 and B7, both of which are found in nooch, have been found to improve the health of hair, skin, and fingernails. The protein in nooch also aids skin health and can help it maintain elasticity and avoid wrinkling.

It's Good for Digestion

German researchers have discovered that nutritional yeast can aid digestion and stimulate the appetite. For people who are lactose intolerant, nooch is a great cheese substitute. It contains similar amounts of protein and nutrients, but no lactose.

It Can Boost Metabolism

The B vitamins in nooch can provide yet another benefit. They help the body process carbohydrates into fuels for energy. In doing so, metabolic function is enhanced. You burn more calories and have more energy. That is a great asset for improving overall health.

There's more than one kind of yeast and the lesser-known variety can improve your health in multiple ways. If you've tried nutritional yeast, consider picking some up. You may enjoy the taste and you will definitely like being healthier.
