How to Get Your Back Ready for the Outdoors

By Virginia Laird

With the first glimpse of sunshine in the books as winter comes to a close, you may be antsy to get outside more. While mentally you may be ready to begin firing up the grill and spending quality time outdoors, your body may not be as excited. Chiropractors suggest as clients get a hint of warm air and get outside, they quickly do far more than should be done, which can lead to back pain. To prepare your body for the many chores waiting outside and prevent back pain along the way, there are a few things you can do, including:

  • Stretch before tackling any task
  • Begin walking short distances
  • Don’t do too much too quickly

Stretch Before Tackling Any Task

Spring always welcomes a plethora of things to be done to beautify the yard. Chiropractors advise that one of the worst things a patient can do is to assume that because it is not a gym, the work that lies ahead won’t be hard. Making time to stretch the muscles and the back can prevent injury and help to reduce stiffness.

Begin Walking Short Distances

As it warms up outside, you may be tempted to set out on a long jog, begin doing strenuous tasks in the yard, or play some softball. Whatever you are thinking, if you haven’t been physically active during the winter you may be putting the cart before the horse. Chiropractors recommend building some stamina to perform these outdoor activities by beginning with walking through your neighborhood.

Don’t Do Too Much Too Quickly

When the weather is nice, it is easy to feel like you can move mountains; however, the reality may be just a little hill. Trying to do too much too quickly is a sure way to cause injury to the body. Chiropractors suggests that your laundry list of to-dos should not be complete in the first day you are outside. Many back injuries are caused from people trying to accomplish far too much before the body is ready to handle the vast number of chores.

As you head out the door to take advantage of the fresh warm air this spring, make sure you put your back first. After all, getting injured the first day (or even week) outside will only keep you indoors longer than you want.
