Can We Manage Blood Pressure Without Medication?

By Tom Herrin

There are quite a few health issues that affect people today.  For some of the more common ones, many people simply assume they are destined to take medications for maintenance.  In some cases, this may be true because they have some kind of serious problems that require more serious treatment.  For many others, poor lifestyle choices have put them in a hole.  When this is the case, some changes in habits may be enough to help turn things around.  High blood pressure is one of those that may respond well to such measures, and there are quite a few things that may be tried.

Eat Healthier

Many of us are products of the choices we make.  At times, it is actually a failure to examine choices that can cause problems.  There is much more information available regarding nutrition on many menus.  For those who rely on fast foods, checking the menu before ordering may help to learn more about fat content as well as calories.  Making adjustments here may help to cut bad fats, reduce calories, and choose better grains.  Doing this for a short period of time may yield some good results.

Find Ways to Cut Stress

Most people deal with some kind of stress at one time or another.  Some do so more than others.  There are those who just can't leave it alone and spend entirely too much time worrying about things they can do little about.  Passing stress along to others may help.  Allowing someone else to be responsible for decisions that need to be made may allow a little better sleep at night.  Either delegating decision-making to others or having more trust in them may do wonders for blood pressure.  Another way to let go of some stress is to simply let some things go completely.

Do Your Own Exams

When we keep tabs on ourselves, we can become more aware.  Home monitors for checking blood pressure are pretty inexpensive.  They are also easy to use.  Some even keep an internal record of your numbers.  We have one at our home and use it often.  Anytime I feel that my blood pressure is higher than it should be, I make some adjustments.  So far, it has worked well, and I have never had a long-term problem with mine.  Sometimes a little awareness can make a big difference.
