Why Are Kids So Sick During the School Year?

By Sara Butler

Like millions of other parents across the country, you’ve probably been looking forward to your precious little child going back to school. But back to school also means back to sick! It can feel as if your kid is constantly sick when school’s in session and it’s not just your imagination. Back to school does usher in illness, but why? Here’s what you need to know so you can win the battle of the school year sniffles!

Why So Sick?

Going back to school is exciting, but it can also be stressful. A child must get used to a new schedule and work on re-establishing bedtime routines. That can put stress on their little bodies and cause their immune systems to take a bit of a nosedive. When you combine that with the germ breeding grounds that are schools, you’ve got a perfect storm for sickness.

Kids touch a lot of things during the day and aren’t the most diligent when it comes to hand washing. They also may not shield their noses and mouths when sneezing. That’s all a great way to pass on illness and get sick themselves.

What to Do

Take a deep breath and realize that it’s normal for your child to be sick during the year. In fact, the average child will have up to 10 upper respiratory infections in a year. As they get older, that number should drop – but you need to make it a part of your expectations because sick days will happen.

Just make sure you monitor them for something serious, such as pneumonia, strep throat, or meningitis when they do get sick.

In the meantime, teach your child about the importance of hand washing! That’s the number one way to pass around germs, so make sure you give them the lecture about hand washing before meals and after using the bathroom when they’re at school.

You may not be able to prevent every sneeze and sniffle, but you can try to reduce the chances! Make sure your child eats a balanced diet, gets plenty of physical activity, and see the chiropractor on a regular basis in order to bolster the strength of their immune system!

If you want to help your family avoid the sniffles all school year long, then come into The Joint Chiropractic today!
