Chiropractic Frees You from the Inactivity of Tonic Pain

By Chris Brown

Injury and pain throws the body into a series of system changes aimed at prioritizing quick healing. These processes are built over millions of years to aid survival and, for the most part, are entirely automated. However, a post-injury phenomenon known as tonic pain, in which a person's behavior shifts to inactivity with limited motivation, can work against the best interests of the individual in some cases. A recent study has shown that chiropractic may be the key to keeping yourself mentally sharp and mobile when your tonic pain switches on.

What Is Tonic Pain?

Tonic pain a behavioral change that often occurs following an injury that impacts a sufferer's cognition and motivation. This phenomenon has a purpose in evolutionary survival, as it is orchestrated by the body's desire to conserve energy for healing. However, in instances in which movement is necessary to facilitate optimal healing (such as during joint surgery recovery) or when afflicted by a chronic condition, tonic pain can worsen an already poor situation.

Chiropractic Prevents the Numbing Effects of Tonic Pain

As tonic pain is hardwired into our healing process, it can be incredibly difficult to overcome with conscious effort alone. However, one study published in 2019 found that chiropractic manipulation may be able to help you stay sharp during recovery. The study of 15 participants tested the pain scores and neural activity from a pain-inducing cold-presser test, before and following either chiropractic or sham treatments. It found that, while unpleasantness scores decreased for both treatments, pain scores only lowered for sham treatment participants.

Chiropractic manipulation, on the other hand, did not seem to decrease the pain. This finding coincided with the sham treatment's reduction in brain activity that was not repeated with the chiropractic group. Researchers concluded that chiropractic altered the way the body centrally processes pain, which allowed those participants to avoid the numbing effects of tonic pain. Instead, the retained sensitivity that chiropractic induced kept those participants' brains working at a more active level.
