Why You Should Dry Brush Before the Shower
By Genevieve Cunningham
When it comes to taking a shower, most people’s routine looks similar. Turn on the water to let it get warm, get undressed, hop in the shower, and then bathe. While your routine might vary slightly depending on your particular setup, it probably doesn’t deviate too much. But what if all of us have it just a bit wrong? What if we’re all missing a very important step that may bring numerous benefits to our bodies? For those people who have figured out dry brushing, the consensus would probably be just that. Take a look at this quick and easy pre-shower addition to your routine, and the benefits that may come about because of it.
What Is Dry Brushing?
Dry brushing involves brushing the skin on your body with a medium to hard bristled brush. Many of the brushes have long handles so that you can reach those hard to reach spots on the body. It doesn’t actually have to be done before a shower … it can be done anytime. But many people feel as though they need a shower afterward, which is why it makes a great addition to the pre-shower routine. Once you find a brush that is hard enough to invigorate the skin but not so much that it hurts, you’ll brush your dry skin from bottom to top. Many people like to make a slight circular motion with their brush. What is it doing? Essentially, it’s a lot like exfoliating the face. It brushes off dead skin cells, and stimulates the skin to grow new, healthy, soft cells on top.
What Are the Benefits?
Besides leaving the skin softer and free of old cells, it may also bring about some of the following benefits:
-
It Might Help With Cellulite - Many people claim that dry brushing decreases the appearance of cellulite in the body. It’s thought that the brushing helps eliminate toxins that break connective tissue. Is it a miracle cure? No way. But many find even temporary relief from cellulite a welcome benefit.
-
It May Get the Lymphatic System Moving - The lymphatic system is basically your body’s trash can. It’s made up of various lymph nodes that clear out toxins and waste from the cells in the body. And the cleaner your body, the better you feel. Along with feeling better, a well functioning lymphatic system has also been linked to fewer instances of illness.
-
It Might Help Relieve Stress - Many find the act of dry brushing actually feels good. They enjoy the process, and as the brush reaches each part of the body, it acts similar to a massage. Some people even enjoy it so much, they get addicted to the calming sensation that it brings to your body and mind.
Should You Dry Brush?
Unless you have some aversion to brushing or a doctor’s orders to skip it, there’s no reason not to give it a try! While it might feel strange or off-putting the very first time, you’ll likely grow to love the effects that it brings to your body. If you want a quick and easy way to tighten your skin and boost your overall health, buy a brush and get to it.
