Back-to-School Health Tips You Need to Know

By Genevieve Cunningham

It's almost time to go back to school. This means something different to everyone. Some kids are more than ready to be back with their friends and activities. Others are begging for a few more weeks of summer. But for parents, it's a mix of all of it. Parents begin to worry about schedules, supplies, and new clothes. They begin to stress about the transition for their kids and for the whole family. And of course, they begin to worry about health. When kids are at home, you know what they're doing and eating and consuming. But at school? All you can do is your best. If you want to keep your kids healthy through the back-to-school transition and beyond, take a look at these tips to help you out.

Adjust Your Backpack

Backpacks typically don't do damage until years later. Or perhaps more accurately, the damage of backpacks isn't noticeable until years later. Books are heavy -- really heavy. Lugging around a heavy backpack all day can cause tension and pain in the spine. This might manifest as back or neck pain. If you want to keep your back healthy and pain-free, leave as many books as possible at school, in a locker, or at home, and make sure that your backpack straps are offering maximum balance and support.

Pack Your Lunch

Don't eat the school lunch. Don't go out every day. Don't eat junk food. Just wake up a few minutes earlier and pack your lunch. By doing this one action, you can save money, save calories, and save your health. And since you have control over what goes into your lunch, you can keep it interesting. If you don't already do this (for yourself or for your kids), make this a goal to really improve health long-term.

Get Enough Sleep

Once school starts, everything changes. Our routines are changed. The amount of time we have to focus is increased. It's a lot to deal with, especially in the beginning. Make sure that sleep is a big part of the back-to-school process. Everyone needs a little more at this time of year, and more importantly, it needs to be quality sleep. Set bedtimes, set screen limits, and help everyone in your home get better sleep. This will help save both mental and physical health during this time of transition.

The back-to-school time of year can be hard on everyone. There are a lot of adjustments to make and a lot of changes happening all at once. Be patient with the process. And to keep your kids as healthy as possible, use these tips. With a slow, methodical, and steady approach, your whole family will make it through with health and happiness intact this year.
