Leaving Stress Behind: Some Tips That Might Work

By Genevieve Cunningham

Getting rid of stress is one of the most difficult things to do. It seems that most of us worry by nature. We worry about kids and work and friendships. We worry about money and material possessions. It's a stressful world. But stress is killing us. It's stealing our health and our joy. So what can we do about it? If you're ready to finally leave stress behind for good, take a look at these tips for finding a little peace.

Don't Worry About the Future

Thinking about the future is important. If we don't think about the future, we won't be prepared for things like retirement. The difference is in the semantics, and in this instance, the semantics are huge. Yes, think about the future. But no, don't worry about it. Make plans for saving money and working arrangements and family. But don't let it consume your thoughts. Instead, be in the present moment as much as possible. When people are able to end their worry and live in the present, they're often shocked at how much better they feel overall.

Find Something to Do

Therapists often suggest anxious patients pick up crafting. Sounds silly, right? But they suggest it because it works. Sometimes, you just have to give your hands something to do. You have to put your mind to work. Crafting -- or another hobby -- occupies your mind and hands and takes the stress away. Create a space in your home where you can go to unwind and de-stress with a similar activity, and you may find the stress begin to melt away.

Get Some Plants

Did you know that plants are incredibly calming? If you have the space, plant a garden. If not, buy some houseplants. Being near life -- even plant life -- is soothing to the soul. It becomes a habit (taking care of them), a counselor (talking to them), and a responsibility (keeping them alive). It gives us purpose and a kind of companionship all in one. Find some durable plants, bring them into your home, and liven up your space while lowering your worries at the same time.

Stress is no joke. It steals people's lives every day. The bad news is that we can't completely escape it. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to manage it! Use these tips to get your stress under control, and you may begin to experience a more settled and content life as soon as today.
