Tips for Making it Through Allergy Season

By Genevieve Cunningham

There is so much to look forward to once spring finally rolls around. The outdoor activities ramp up, moods are brightened, and that feeling of freshness is everywhere. But if there is one negative aspect of bringing in the warm weather and rains, it’s the allergies that come with it. Allergies tend to really get the best of people during this time of year, and the consequences (stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and sleepless nights) are more than a little frustrating. If you would like to tackle allergy season head-on this season, take a look at these tips.

Get a Humidifier

It’s incredibly difficult to avoid allergens, mostly because they are floating through the air at any given moment. But it can be helpful to create an atmosphere in the home that caters to the symptoms. If you don’t already have one, it’s time to invest in a humidifier, especially for the area where sleep happens. Dry air further irritates the nasal passages, which makes it harder to heal. Keeping that air moist softens the lining of the nose, reducing the pain and pressure of allergies. Some even incorporate a nice soothing smell, such as a minty or lavender scent, that can help create better sleep.

Regularly Wash Objects

Since pollen and other allergens are literally everywhere, now is a great time to create a washing or rinsing routine. Wash clothes and rinse shoes after any outdoor outings. Wipe down outdoor door knobs, screens, and objects that transition between outdoors and indoors. And finally, make sure to keep the car clean! Wash the outside and vacuum the inside regularly to get rid of as much as the loose pollen as possible.

Turn to Natural Remedies

Once the allergies have set in, there are some options. Some people turn to the doctor for a shot that clears them up, but others don’t find this method effective. There are also over-the-counter medications that can be taken for short periods of time to alleviate symptoms. If you’d like a more natural approach, look to things such as neti pots, salt water rinses, vapor rubs, and even hot steamy showers. These methods can help clear the sinuses, which relieves pressure and helps get you over the largest hump of allergy season.

Dealing with allergies is no fun. Unfortunately, as you get older, you’re more likely to deal with these pesky problems year round! Get some relief through the toughest part of the year with these tips, and make spring an enjoyable time to rest, relax, and enjoy the great outdoors allergy-free.
