Chiropractic Sounds Like Relief for Ear Infections
By Chris Brown
Inner ear infections or, as they're called in the medical community, otitis media, are common ailments that can affect almost anyone. They are, however, more frequent for those who have had serious past infections or children with developing immune systems. For them, these infections can potentially equal serious, sometimes permanent conditions. Luckily, chiropractic has shown great success at resolving ear infections and even healing some of the damages created by them.
Ear Infections Aren't Just a Nuisance
An ear infection occurs when bacteria or a virus enters the inner ear, typically from congestion during a cold or flu. Resolving an ear infection often involves supporting the body's fight against the disease by managing symptoms and aiding its natural defenses. Ear infections can become dangerous if the infection spreads throughout the head or damages the delicate parts of the inner ear (resulting in hearing loss). To prevent those worst-case scenarios, antibiotics or other more extreme measures are sometimes taken. Because of the large bacterial exposure of children (and their less advanced immune systems) it is important to monitor them for early signs of ear infection.
Chiropractors Aid Ear Infection Recovery and Prevention
The risk of more serious complications, hearing loss, and wide-spread infections, can be mitigated with early intervention and quick recovery. Chiropractic is able to do this by correcting restrictions in the central nervous system. This helps the body to naturally drain fluid buildup while boosting its immune response. Because of this, chiropractic was able to help a 9-month-old child in a 2010 case who had recurrent ear infections which required regular consumption of antibiotics. Chiropractic manipulation therapy not only cleared his ears of fluid, but his ear infections did not re-emerge throughout the seven weeks of the study.
In fact, 95 percent of all ear infection patients improved (43 percent after only one or two treatments) from chiropractic according to a 1996 review of 46 cases. There is even evidence that chiropractic can reverse damage and restore hearing when the infection has progressed to the point of hearing loss.
A study in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics of a 6-year-old boy, with infection-related auditory loss and fluid in both ears, saw complete fluid drainage and a recovery to normal hearing following six sessions of chiropractic manipulations. While chiropractic's abilities to resolve ear infections may seem like magic, its success is based off the science of facilitating optimized bodily and nervous system function.
