You Can Exercise in the Cold With the Right Stuff

By Tom Herrin

There are times when our routines for good exercise have a bit of a kink thrown in them.  In the central part of Texas, we are pretty fortunate in that we don't often have long temperatures with extreme cold.  The other side of that is that, when it does happen, we may not be as well prepared as we would like.  This can leave us with a serious wrinkle in our program.  Too many times, the result of that is abandonment of our schedule, and we all know what can happen he when this is the case.  It can be really tough to get back on track.  For exercising outdoors in the cold, layers can be the best solution.  A little planning ahead can make this happen.

The Inside Layer

What touches our body is pretty significant.  It is suggested that this first layer be fairly tight-fitting and able to wick away moisture.  The ability to allow airflow is also significant.  When we are in the cold, it can be miserable to get wet with perspiration and stay that way.  Getting moisture away from us while having air circulation to dry us is a big part of this.

The Buffer Layer

While we may think of a second layer as just another layer, it has a job, too.  This is the one that is between so it seems to moderate.  As such, it is suggested that it be very insulating with a bulky material.  The familiar things such as wool or fleece may still function well here.  These are traditionally successful.  There are several newer materials as well that may be suitable.  The point is to keep us warm but dry by using these air spaces correctly.  While they may be bulky, they are lightweight, too.

The Outside Layer

Every layer has a specific purpose, and the outer one needs to be tough.  It is the one that is in contact with whatever comes your way.  Whether this is wind, rain, or something that may rough us up, this layer needs to be able to withstand it.  It also needs to be removable, at least, in parts.  This can complete the task of maintaining the right temperature for you as outside temperature and conditions change.  With today's technology, you can be prepared with fairly lightweight apparel at an affordable price.
