Chiropractic Tip: Stay Safe When Practicing Yoga
By Sandy Schroeder
Many of us have found yoga to be a healthy boost for aching backs, but we should all know what to do and what not to do on the mat.
HarvardHealth listed several yoga safety tips.
- Check with your doctor to see if yoga is right for you
- Look for special classes geared for your issues
- Talk with your instructor about pain issues
- Use props like blocks or bolsters for more support in poses when you need them
- If you can’t reach your toes, use a yoga belt to loop around the feet to extend your reach
- Do forward bends while sitting rather than standing and brace your back as you straighten up
- Stop when a move is uncomfortable
- Ask for help to modify difficult poses
How Your Chiropractor Can Help
As you explore the benefits of yoga or other fitness routines, your chiropractor can monitor your progress and offer more safety tips.
The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you helps people pursue fitness every day, along with health and wellness. The Joint’s doctors of chiropractic are well-equipped to help.
Your chiropractor will talk with you about your goals, issues, daily routine and health history. A gentle targeted spinal adjustment may be the starting point to help you move ahead. The spine houses the central nervous system that controls much of what the body does. When the spine works well, we may, too.
Weekly 15-minute spinal adjustments may keep the benefits coming. At the same time, it may provide a safety net and checkpoint to pursue healthy eating, stress reduction and good workplace habits.
Learn How to Let the Stress Go
Find what works for you. Yoga, music, hobbies or other workouts like running, walking or jogging, may help you move away from stress. Deep breathing, visual imagery and mindfulness meditation may work too.
Make Your Workplace Work for You
If you sit all day every day, make sure you have a comfortable chair that supports your back and shoulders. Keep your feet flat on the floor. Practice good posture, and take five- or 10-minute breaks every hour.
Eat Healthy and Savor Your Meals
Start with fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, lean protein and healthy oils like olive oil. Find recipes you love and make meals a time to stop, talk and just enjoy the food.
When you are ready to start, stop by The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you. Affordable personal healthcare plans and packages eliminate the hassle of insurance. Weekend and evening hours are convenient, and no appointments are needed.
