How to Improve Your Posture

By Sara Butler

People tend to sit a lot. Think about it: At home, in the car, at work -- for most people that involves a lot of sitting. Because of this sitting, new health threats are on the horizon including poor posture. One of the unintended side effects of so much sitting is that the way the body is held, the muscles react, and the spine is aligned can become dysfunctional. That can result in pain and other unpleasant side effects. If you're worried about how much you tend to sit and its impact on your posture, then here are a few chiropractic tips to help you improve your posture.

Keep an Eye on Device Time

Staring at your handheld tablet or smartphone all day can take a toll on your spine. In fact, the overuse of tablets and phones can cause something called "tech neck" that can result in stress and strain placed on your spine. To help prevent this, simply limit your screen time each day. When you do use your devices, keep them straight out in front of you so you don't have to look down. Also, work some stretches into your day to help relieve the pressure put on your neck and spine. Talk to the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic for some tips on stretching to help prevent tech neck.

Build Some Strength

It's important to work on muscle strength in order to help improve your posture. How can you achieve this? Work out your core muscles!

When you're sitting up straight with your shoulders back and your chin slightly tucked, focus on engaging the muscles in your stomach. If you can walk and sit with these muscles in mind, then you will slowly build strength that helps to support your spine and perfect your posture. Throwing some core-strengthening yoga poses or Pilates isn't a bad idea either when you work out. Over time, focusing on the engagement of these muscles will make good posture easier to maintain.
