Solving the Sleep Problem May Begin with Your Chiropractor

Most of us have a special backup of sleep tricks, but the one we often miss is making sure our mattress and pillow really work for us.

The American Chiropractic Association says the correct mattress and pillow is vital to helping your body rest. The mattress should support body weight, evenly keeping the spine in its natural alignment. The right one depends on the individual. To test a mattress lie down on it for three to five minutes. Just sitting won’t work.

Choosing Good Mattresses

The mattress should provide support head to toe with no gaps. As a temporary measure if your mattress is too soft, place a board under it. But later you will need to change it. That is too much firmness in an ongoing basis. Rotating mattresses and frames helps maintain even support too. Also, if you have lost or gained weight or run into other medical problems you may need to change mattresses.

Choosing Good Pillows

When lying on your side, ACA sys your head and neck should be level with your mid and lower spine. Your head and neck should not be propped up at an angle from your body. If you sleep on your side with one hand propped under your pillow the pillow is not providing enough support. Keep looking for one that fits you.

Visiting the Chiropractor

The chiropractor will have more tips on ways to get a good night’s sleep. In the initial visit there will be a spinal adjustment to evaluate spinal health. This will be followed by a discussion of daily activities, and a review of pain or other problems, such as sleeping. Also a complete medical history will be reviewed.

The chiropractor’s goal will be to help solve problems and find relief without medications or surgery. If pain and discomfort at night continue, along with difficulty falling asleep, the chiropractor will help to solve the problem checking other conditions in the home, and diet and activity habits.

The chiropractor really becomes the wellness coach that helps solve life’s problems, including sleeping, as they pop up. I have seen several people in my family, use their chiropractor to step in when issues like sleeping cropped up. They also got help with back and neck pain, headaches and tiredness. Each time it took a little work, but together they found solutions.
