Preventing Holiday Health Hazards from Happening
By Brandi Swieter
The holidays can be a time of fun and family, but it can also lead to many health hazards that some people are unaware could happen. To keep things joyful this season, people need to know what hazards to expect and learn how to avoid them. It’s possible to prevent holiday health hazards from happening as long as people know what to be wary of come winter time.
Burns From Baking
Many people believe they could cook for hours without ever having to worry about something happening. Burns are actually quite common over the holidays when so much baking is being done. Cooks should always be sure to handle their cooking with care, using pot holders, oven mitts, and other necessary kitchen items to stay safe. It’s also best if just one or two people remain in the kitchen while meals are being made. Too many people could spell disaster with people with hot pans bumping into each other.
Falls From Decorating
Decorating the house is a favorite holiday activity for many. It’s fun to hang festive lights and put up Santa Claus signs that illuminate in the dark. Falls from decorating are one of the most common health hazards that occur during the season, though, making it necessary to use extreme caution when doing so. People should never get up on ladders without being sure they’re steady and wearing the appropriate footwear. It’s also ideal if someone else is nearby to keep the ladder steady should it start to waiver.
Slips From Ice
Ice can set in easily, especially on particularly cold mornings. Many people walk outdoors without a second thought, often failing to realize their porch has frozen over thanks to the icicles that dripped overnight. It’s important to check for ice each night and make sure to salt the areas where it’s present so slips can be avoided.
Accidents From Driving
Car accidents happen all too often during the holiday season. So many people are on the road attempting to get their shopping completed, travel to other cities and states to see family members, and even make their daily commute to work with the weather less than ideal. People need to use extra caution while driving during the holiday months to avoid accidents.
Preventative measures are key in ensuring the holidays go smoothly. So many health hazards come up during the holiday season, which can quickly ruin the spirit and get people feeling down. By using caution and preventing what you can, the holidays will continue on as well as possible.
