How to Prepare Yourself for a New Fitness Class
By Genevieve Cunningham
Joining a brand new fitness class can be intimidating. Whether it's something slow and low-impact like beginner's yoga or it's something more intense like kickboxing, the thought of being an absolute beginner in a class of people we don't know is a little nerve-racking. Luckily, there is plenty we can do beforehand to prepare ourselves for what's ahead and to make the transition easier. If you're thinking of joining a new class in the near future, take a look at these tips to get your body and mind ready.
Get Your Mind Ready
Before you ever step foot in the class, imagine yourself loving it. Will it come true? Maybe or maybe not, but it will definitely help you go into the class with a better attitude. It's also important to remind yourself that everyone in the class was once a beginner; you're definitely not the only one. Everyone is also there for the same reason -- to improve fitness. You don't have to be perfect or know every move from the beginning. Remember that a class is a way to improve your health and wellness, and leave anxiety or nerves at the door.
Stretch
No matter what kind of class you're going to, you want it to go as smoothly as possible. You don't want to injure yourself or get a cramp in your first class! To prepare your body, start stretching well in advance. Stretch every morning and every night. Loosen your muscles and joints. You'll probably still be sore and stiff after your class, but you're far less likely to injure yourself if your body is stretched and prepared beforehand.
Do Some Research
If you've never been to a class before, consider doing a little research. It's true that every class and every instructor will be different, but if you watch a class online or even just get familiar with a few of the staple moves, you'll probably be a lot more comfortable. A little research may also give you tips and pointers to get the most of your workout as quickly as possible.
Joining a class -- whether it's at the local gym, at the park, or somewhere else -- is a great way to get motivated, get fit, and really improve your health. Use these tips to get yourself ready for the challenge, and you'll thrive at your first class and find long-term success in your health.
