Comfort Is a Key to Successful Exercise in the Cold
By Tom Herrin
One of the biggest problems any of us faces in keeping up our exercise program is staying motivated. It is usually easy, at first, but as time goes on our enthusiasm may begin to wane. If we are into outdoor exercise, everything may seem fine as long as the weather is good and temperatures are mild. Even the best of programs and commitments can begin to diminish once outdoor temperatures begin to drop.
I really enjoy riding my bicycle as much as possible. When I made a decision to ride daily as long as temps were above 30 degrees, it was a significant challenge trying to find something to wear that would allow me to start off warm rough but not become too warm too soon. I have since discovered that layers can help with this if done correctly.
The First Layer
It is generally suggested that we wear something that is tight-fitting and lightweight as a first layer. One of the classic problems we have had in the past was wearing something such as sweats and having them drenched with sweat after we had exercised for a while. This means that we may end up cold. Newer materials can help wick away moisture and provide some productive airflow.
The Second Layer
Insulation is a major concern for the second layer we wear. As with most insulating materials, it will likely be bulky but lightweight. This helps to prevent any kind of rapid heating or cooling. The long-standing materials such as wool, down, and fleece are still valid here, but there are plenty of newer materials that have been developed in recent years. This layer should also allow moisture and air to move through it. Some have zippers and pockets that may be opened for greater comfort.
The Third Layer
Toughness is required in the outermost layer. As with so many things, it needs to be able to protect us. It should resist rain and wind. It should be able to withstand objects that are abrasive such as sand, rocks, and anything that could end up scraping us. It is really good if it has some removable parts so that you can make adjustments as you go. With today's technology used in making workout apparel, you can easily find something that works well at an affordable price.
