What the Word Diet Really Means and Why It Matters

By Genevieve Cunningham

There’s a lot of hype and misinformation over the word diet. This tiny little word brings up some big controversy. People are quite split on the concept of a diet. Either they are adamantly against any kind of calorie or food restriction or they are all for sticking to a very strict nutritional schedule. But what’s the big deal? Do we need to be on the latest diet trend? While it’s true that your food intake is an important topic, it’s almost certain that the concept of a diet is overblown … or perhaps it’s just incredibly misunderstood. Take a look at the real meaning of the word diet, and how you can incorporate a good one into your life for better health.

So What Is a Diet?

If you were to Google the word diet, the first definition says that it is “the kinds of food that a person habitually eats.” While we think of a diet as something restrictive, that’s not really the technical meaning of the word. If you eat broccoli and lettuce all day, that’s your diet. If you eat candy bars and ice cream, that’s your diet. So is a diet important? When you look at it this way instead of as a very particular plan to follow, the answer is a resounding yes. What you eat always matters, and that means your diet is something to pay attention to.

What Should a Healthy Diet Look Like?

This might vary from person to person. Some people need more protein than others, while a different person may need to avoid a particular food altogether. Speaking in generalities, a healthy diet consists of vegetables, fruits, lean meats, and whole grains. Your specific calorie needs and nutrient breakdown will be based on your particular body type and your goals. To find the perfect diet, always consult with a doctor to make sure all of your healthy bases are covered.

So should you pay attention to a diet? In the true sense of the word, you should definitely pay attention to what goes into your body. After all, you are what you eat! Whether or not you get on a calorie restrictive plan is up to you, but every person needs a healthy diet to follow on a daily basis. Your goals, your body, your mind, and your long-term health depend on your understanding of this little word, and on proper implementation into your life.
