Eating Your Veggies Can Do More Than Please Your Mom
By Tom Herrin
There are all kinds of diets preferred by all kinds of individuals. The old meat and potato diets are beginning to fade away due to our better education about foods and nutrition. Many people thought that this was going to build muscle and provide the things we need to perform our daily tasks. Modern research has taught us otherwise. We now know that vegetables provide far more good things in our diet. Without them, our health suffers and increases the risk that we may become limited in achieving our maximum potential.
Cancer And Disease Prevention Are High On The List
Veggies contain some pretty important things. First of all, they are usually high in fiber. Meats tend to be the opposite. Fibers can help reduce the instances of colon cancers and aid in digestion. Second is that they contain antioxidants. These help fight disease and reduce the chances of diabetes and heart disease.
You Can Feel Fuller Without High Calories
Most vegetables are high in water content. Since so many of us don’t drink sufficient amounts of water, they can help to provide more without the weight-gaining effect that so many other foods have. As a matter of fact, some are considered free foods in that you can really eat all you want without the fear that you will gain weight. Beans can be used to supply protein needs. The water and protein both serve to help you to avoid feeling hungry.
They Are Packed With Nutrients
Pretty much everyone knows the fact that vegetables are a great source of vitamins. One of the big ones is Vitamin K. It is known for helping to strengthen bones. A study has shown that more leafy greens seem to help reduce the incidence of broken hips in some groups of women. With a surplus of good vitamins, you can expect to not only feel better but look better. Many of these help your skin and hair.
Learn To Like Variety
A good rule of thumb is to have plenty of color in your diet. When you include reds, yellows, greens, and any others you can find, you will be ensuring that you are also getting a wide range of nutrients and other things. Be adventuresome. Your mom probably always told you to eat those veggies. Even if she didn’t know all the technical reasons, she knew what was good for you. Some things never change.
