4 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism
As we get older (roughly after the age of 30 or so), our bodies' metabolisms tend to gradually slow down. Meaning, it's pretty difficult to eat whatever your heart desires, workout infrequently, and still expect it to not affect your health and/or weight. Are you missing your high school years yet? Yeah, me too. Fortunately, it doesn't mean that you're doomed to a life with a squeaky, slow metabolism, either. Here are some expert-recommended ways to speed up your metabolism at any age:
Tip #1: Do what works for you and your body
While some people may find success with eating six small meals per day, that may not necessarily work for you. According to Dr. Domenica Rubino, an endocrinologist and spokesperson for the Obesity Society, “the research is certainly clear that breakfast is beneficial. But beyond that, you need to find what works for you”. If you feel as though your body runs more smoothly when eating three larger meals and perhaps one small snack, then there is no reason why you should avoid doing that.
Tip #2: Fill up on protein
Experts agree that protein is a main factor when it comes to building healthy, lean muscle mass. Furthermore, increasing muscle mass can actually help to rev up your metabolism, as well. A 2012 Netherlands study showed that eating a healthy amount of protein daily (1.2 grams of protein for each kilogram that you weigh) could help you drop pounds as well as keep them off. Stock your fridge with nutritious, lean proteins such as fish, chicken, turkey, and lean beef.
Tip #3: Spice up your meals
Despite the fact that their specific effects are still unknown, some studies have shown that certain spicy foods (chili peppers, ginger, and turmeric, to name a few) may help to boost your metabolism. If you are interested in experimenting with them, consider adding them to soups, rice dishes, desserts, etc. You may be pleasantly surprised!
Tip #4: Up your cardio
Do you want to burn extra calories even when you're not working out? Then you should do a little bit of extra cardio during your workouts. Getting at least thirty minutes of cardiovascular exercise (running, doing the elliptical, dancing, speed walking, etc.) five days per week can help your body to burn 190 extra calories per day, even when you're in resting mode. Sounds good to me!
