Preventive Measures to Keep Your Kids Healthy
By Brandi Goodman
Prevention is the first line of defense against illness. You need to teach your children how to prevent sickness so they can continue to remain healthy and well. Show them which measures they should be taking each day to maintain their well-being.
Handwashing
Washing your hands is one of the best prevention methods there is. It allows you to wash away the germs and keep yourself safe from bacteria. Germs on your hands often infect you when you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Keeping them clean stops this from happening. Teach your kids the importance of handwashing and make sure they know they need to scrub for at least 20 seconds for the job to be done.
Applying Sunscreen
Vitamin D is provided by the sun. Harmful UV rays are as well. You want to get outside and get some sun exposure, but you want to be sure you're protected when you do. Applying sunscreen is extremely important for preventing skin cancer and even basic damage to your skin. Make sure your kids are applying sunscreen regularly while they're outdoors and covering any exposed areas -- their face and neck as well.
Quitting Smoking
You need to set a good example for your kids if you hope for them to follow suit. Quit smoking if you currently do. Secondhand smoke can do a lot more damage to little lungs than you might think. If your kids are exposed to even slight smoke in the home or car, they can develop problems with breathing. Asthma and pneumonia are common worries for both you and your children if you smoke regularly, making your chances worse to catch viruses that can worsen these health concerns.
Eating Healthy Meals and Snacks
The food you put into your body can make or break your health. You'll experience poor health eventually if you find yourself always eating junk and fast food. You should encourage your kids to eat healthy meals and snacks that are beneficial to their health. Provide them with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and water that offer the nutrients and vitamins they need.
Prevention is key in many instances. You need to teach your kids all you can about how to prevent illness and safety concerns. Make sure they're washing their hands often, applying sunscreen before they go outside, and eating healthy meals and snacks. You, yourself. should also be doing these things and lead by example, as well as quit smoking so your children aren't impacted. With these prevention tips in mind, your children can begin to understand just how important it is.
