Hiking With Friends Can Improve Social Circles

By Tom Herrin

Hanging out with friends can be enjoyable, but doing so with a purpose can give more meaning and increase ties.  Too many times people have social time with no real activity in mind.  It can become counterproductive and alienate people from each other.  When people share a common goal, they can strengthen relationships by encouraging one another while challenging themselves.  Some people have joined workout groups that push pretty hard.  This may work for some, but hiking with others can be less stressful and still provide opportunities to improve health and relationships.

Dependence On Each Other Can Bind You

Most people who get out in nature and hike have some understanding of a buddy system.  It is meant to support each other in case of injury as well as keep people from getting lost.  A smart hiker will always use a buddy when hiking in any wilderness area.  As people learn to support each other in this, they will learn to trust and be trusted.  This is an important part of developing relationships.  It also helps individuals to carry on productive conversations, since there are many things in common on a hiking trip.  Another good thing is that it is finite, there is a definite time frame.  People are not as likely to wear each other out before they depart ways.  Sometime this is a key element in building friendships.

Creativity Can Be Increased

Whether or not people realize it, being in the outdoors can spark creativity.  There is something about being in the outdoors that puts people in touch with nature and increases their appreciation of it.  How many stories and poems have been written based on someone’s experiences outdoors?  How many works of art or photography feature some natural setting that grabs the eye?  Doesn’t it sharpen most people’s appreciation of nature in general?

Good Exercise Is A Natural

When people hike, they are sure to get good exercise and become more fit.  Adjusting things like carrying a backpack can increase the level of exercise as desired.  Even though the gulf coast plains may lack very rugged terrain, there is still plenty of opportunity to vary the amount and kind of hiking by seeking new and different trails.  If you would like to build some stronger relationships while getting some quality exercise, try getting a group of friends to go on a hike together.  You may be surprised at  how much it can add to a relationship.
