Those Who Smile Make Good Workers
By Tom Herrin
There are a lot of ways to do things better. Most of us seek to be more proficient and productive at whatever we do. After all, who has a desire to fail or do poorly? Human nature triggers us to seek success at most things and receive acceptance as well. Looking for ways to improve is an everlasting search for many people. Plenty of products on the market purport to work wonders. A simple smile may do more than any of those products for only the effort to do so. It is hard to imagine anyone who would prefer someone with a scowl on the face to someone with a smile.
It Has Simple Health Benefits
A smile can be a sort of trigger for the body. Doing so may be able to start a series of events within the body. It can slow the heart rate which allows more rest. It can also reduce stress. Since it relaxes the body, it can help to improve the immune system’s ability to react to outside factors that may be disease-causing. It can release endorphins that kill pain, thereby making it an effective natural pain reliever. In one study, those who smile more were shown to extend their longevity as much as seven years. Think about that for a minute.
It Affects Appeal to Those Around Us
When people smile, their countenance changes and attracts others. They are likely to be brought into a group with ease because others see them as accepting. When people smile, others smile back half the time. This is an instant communication. They are seen as empathetic to those who may be having difficulties. Men are more likely to approach women who smile rather than women who only make eye contact.
It Can Improve Productivity
Smiling and showing happiness when you are working tends to make the time pass more quickly. You will often do a better job and get more done. Other workers may be inspired by those who smile. There is also evidence that if you smile, you have a better chance of being considered for advancement. If you smile more, you may be more creative at work, making you a more successful problem solver. Studies have shown that even if you fake a smile, you can see results. Even if it doesn’t come natural, try smiling more, and you will surely see results.
