Your Blood Pressure May Be in Your Hands

By Tom Herrin

When people discover that they have health issues that may require intervention, it can be stressful.  No one wants to begin a regimen of taking medications in order to manage their health if they can avoid it.  For some, there may be a reason that medication is required.  On the other hand, there are a lot of people for whom making some fairly simple lifestyle changes can make all of the difference.  Too many times, when they hear those words, they feel it is the end of doing things that they enjoy and adopting changes that limit what they do each day.  It does not have to be the case for many.  A few small changes may have a significant impact finding enjoyment in the way they live.

A Little Exercise May Go a Long Way

For many who find themselves in a routine that includes no real exercise, the thought of doing so sounds too much like drudgery.  It may remind them of heavy sweating and pounding as they run or jog.  Starting a program of exercise does not have to be all of that.  Even walking a few minutes per day may be much more than they currently do.  Five or 10 minutes per day of mild to moderate activity may serve to make a significant difference.  It is important to remember they are not trying to win a marathon, just add a little more activity.

If You Drink, Cut Back

Many people have an occasional drink.  If this is part of a regular daily routine, they may want to consider making a change.  Self-discipline is a key anytime people are trying to change habits.  This can most likely be accomplished by making decisions ahead of time.  With alcohol, in particular, knowing what kinds of limits to place can be a major part of success.  Alcohol can be a contributing factor with high blood pressure, so establishing those limits ahead of time may ensure greater success.

Be Prepared to Keep Tabs

If you never know what your blood pressure is, it is really hard to control it.  Checking it at a local drug store regularly is easy.  For those who prefer to do so at home, monitors may be purchased for a pretty reasonable price.  We keep one on hand at our home and check often.  It can provide a good guide and help us to to make daily decisions with pretty good success.
