Chiropractic Myths Busted!
By Sara Butler
There are a lot of misconceptions about the world of chiropractic care. Even as chiropractic becomes the first choice for preventative care for millions of people, there are still myths that persist. Here are a few of the misconceptions people have about chiropractic and the truth behind the misconceptions.
Myth No. 1: If You’ve Had Back Surgery You Can’t See a Chiropractor
This one is simply not true. While it’s important to give your chiropractor your complete health history, chiropractic is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Your chiropractor can employ certain techniques to ensure any part of your spine that has either been modified by surgery or is unstable can be treated appropriately.
Myth No. 2: You Can’t Have Chiropractic Care if You Have Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes the bones to become delicate and brittle. If you have it then you shouldn’t dismiss the benefits of chiropractic treatment! Your specific needs and history are carefully evaluated by your chiropractor.
Myth No. 3: Chiropractic Care Takes Too Long to Help
If you’re seeing your chiropractor for treatment of a pain, then how long it takes to help will depend on what is causing the pain (as well as how long you have had the pain). But it also depends on if you follow the treatment plan prescribed by your chiropractor. Do you do the exercises they have suggested? Do you keep your appointments? How much progress you make with your treatment is a collaboration between you and your chiropractor.
Myth No. 4: Chiropractic Adjustments Aren’t Safe
This is a myth that has been studied a lot, and no one has determined through all the investigation that chiropractic is any less safe than any other form of health care. In fact, taking over-the-counter pain medication has been found to be 100 times riskier than getting a chiropractic adjustment, according to the American Chiropractic Association.
Myth No. 5: Adjustments Loosen Your Spine
This is a pervasive myth but it’s not true at all. The only spinal joints that are adjusted are the ones that are locked up, so adjustments actually return mobility to the joint to allow for it to resume normal function. Adjustments also help to heal and stabilize the spine, not make it loose.
If you have questions about chiropractic care you shouldn’t be too nervous to discuss them with your chiropractor during your next adjustment at The Joint. The doctor is happy to answer all questions to help you be comfortable with the treatment you receive!
