How to Spot a Fad Diet

By Sara Butler

When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. That’s why you need a healthy dose of skepticism when evaluating products that make big claims. Almost everyone has fallen victim at one point or another to a fad diet – remember that cabbage soup diet you went on a few years ago? It seems like these diets pop up around every corner. Here are some sure-fire ways you can spot a fad diet so you can steer clear!

Shedding Pounds without Diet and Exercise

It’s a truth universally known that permanent weight loss and the maintenance of a healthy weight takes work. If it was possible to maintain a healthy weight without eating properly and exercising, then no one would have a problem with it. You need to give any product that promises miraculous results with no work on your part a solid pass. Go for a walk instead!

Eating Whatever You Want

You’ve seen the diets that promise you a healthy weight while eating all the bacon your little heart desires. Not to be the bearer of bad news, but that’s not going to help you achieve your health goals. Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight requires making sensible choices when it comes to nutrition. Loading up on high-fat foods is anything but sensible and it won’t get your body what it needs to be healthy.

You’ll Never Need to Diet Again

This one has a small grain of truth to it because you shouldn’t ever go on a diet again. Eating healthy should be a lifestyle change and something you practice each day – not something you do for a little bit. Anything that claims otherwise isn’t legit.

Blocking Digestion of Fat or Calories

There’s no magic pill that will make you healthy or a magic potion that will allow you to eat anything you want but not absorb it! Any product that claims to block the digestion of certain kinds of foods is a waste of time and money. Plus, you never know what’s actually in those things, so do yourself a favor and give these products a wide berth.

Rapid Weight Loss

The experts agree that two pounds a week is the maximum you want to lose in order to stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight. Any diet that promises rapid weight loss is not something that will help you in the long term.

Fads come and go, but good health never goes out of style!
