Your Overall Health Doesn't Require Drastic Change

By Stephen R. Farris

It seems one of the hardest feats to accomplish these days is to focus fully on our health and overall well-being. There seems to be so many obstacles in our way. For instance, we work long hours and by the time we get home, all we would rather do is relax, watch a movie, play games on the phone, then go to bed.

Or we stop off at the bar for a nightcap on the way home, or instead of cooking a healthy meal at home we opt to grab some fast-food. It's no wonder our mental health is suffering as well as dealing with more people becoming obese.

In a nutshell, we don't exercise enough, eat healthy enough, and we allow ourselves to be drained mentally by some of the false realities our society deals with on a regular basis.

But there is hope. We can make some changes -- no matter how big or small they are -- to our everyday lifestyle. Those changes don't have to be drastic, just start small and set goals along the way.

Skip the Bar

Although it's not bad to have a drink or two while maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it becomes a problem when alcohol is consumed excessively. Alcohol consumption on a regular basis can lead to heart disease, stroke, and/or liver disease. Always consider, when it comes to alcohol consumption, drink in moderation or take it a step further and ask the person preparing your drink not to add too much. Still, the best solution would be to refrain from alcohol consumption.

Become More Aware

As a society, we've become obsessed with our electronic devices to the point we are simply not aware of what's going on around us. Sometimes this can have an effect on our mental well-being. Whether playing games on our phone or tablet, or reading news headlines can produce a negative effect, or negative thinking. Limit the time you use your smartphone. Spend more time looking at the scenery around you. Have more meaningful conversations with friends and relatives, even co-workers.

The Bottom Line

We all want to live longer and be healthy. Schedule time to exercise at least 15 minutes each day, whether it's taking a brisk walk, or practicing tai chi, or yoga. Learn to eat healthier by including fresh fruits and vegetables, and leaner cuts of meats. Cook more at home. Put away the electronic devices and learn a new hobby, such as painting, or learning how to play a musical instrument.

These are some of the key changes you can make in your life that doesn't require drastic change. Isn't it time you began your journey to a more vibrant, fit, and healthy lifestyle?
