Is Your Back Working Overtime?

By Sandy Schroeder

In a busy world you may constantly be on duty. If you lift, tote and move stuff at home and at work, you may be asking a lot of your back. Groceries, laundry, kids, and long work sessions can be a lot to handle. Knowing how to lift and how to strengthen your back could help you avoid back pain.

To learn how to protect your back, stop by The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you. The Joint’s licensed chiropractors are well equipped to help you keep your back in shape. They help people of all ages find pain relief and learn the best wellness practices.

Seeing Your Chiropractor

When you come in, you will learn more about spinal health. A gentle, targeted spinal adjustment may be used to help relieve back pain. Ongoing weekly 15-minute spinal adjustments may work to keep you at your peak. At the same time, your chiropractor will help you learn how to protect your back. Here are some good tips from the American Chiropractic Association.

How to Lift and Move Things

  • When lifting, avoid twisting, which is one of the most dangerous movements for the spine
  • For heavy items, push rather than pull, and use your legs to power the push
  • For large items and heavy furniture get help

How to Reach and Bend

  • For items above shoulder level, use a stool and do not strain to reach items. If you have trouble reaching up, move items to lower shelves
  • Never bend from the waist to pick up items. Kneel on one knee close to the item with the other foot flat on the floor

How to Strengthen Your Back

Check with your doctor on approved exercises, then develop a routine to strengthen your abs, obliques, pelvis, hips and glutes. The ACA recommends ones like these for your back.

The bridge Lie flat on the floor with knees bent, arms at side. Lift hips up, squeezing glutes, forming a line from shoulders to knees. Hold two seconds and lower. Gradually do more reps.

Bird dog – Rest weight on hands and knees to form a tabletop. Lift right arm forward and left leg up from behind. Lower and switch sides. Work up to 10 reps.
