How to Reduce Pain While Driving

By Lana Bandoim

Whether you have a long commute to work or enjoy taking frequent drives, pain can become a problem in the car. From back pain to neck pain, driving can turn into a nightmare. However, there are steps that chiropractors recommend to reduce the problems.

Adjust the Seat

The seat needs to be the right height in the car to be comfortable. You do not want to crane the neck or constantly look up to see the road. In addition, the seat has to be close to the steering wheel to avoid arm pain. Continue to adjust the seat until it is in the right position.

Rest

If you are driving for long periods of time, it is important to have rest breaks. Another person can take over the driving duties while you rest. However, for solo trips, consider stopping at a hotel or motel to give the body a chance to rest. In addition, make sure to move around during the rest breaks so that circulation improves.

Get Back Support

Some car seats are comfortable, but others can hurt the back. Consider investing in additional back support to make driving easier. There are padded cushions, pillows and other products designed to reduce back pain while sitting. Another option is a seat wedge made from foam or other materials to help posture.  Make sure to find products that are the right size for your body and car.

Avoid Gripping Too Tightly

Gripping the wheel too tightly can also cause problems. Although you want to have a strong hold on the wheel, it should not be uncomfortable. Gripping the wheel can lead to neck and shoulder tension.

Clean Back Pockets

Instead of trying to stuff a wallet or phone in the back pocket of the pants, clean it out. Emptied back pockets eliminate the possibility of items becoming uncomfortable while driving. Keeping the pockets full of personal items can affect the spine.

Replace the Shocks

Not only is it better for the car, but replacing shocks is also better for the spine. Driving in a shaky car for long hours can rattle the spine and lead to pain. You do not want a bouncing car on long trips.

When driving starts to hurt, consider going to The Joint Chiropractic. The licensed professionals are ready to discuss the problems and offer treatments. The Joint is open on nights and weekends, so there is no need to miss work or important meetings to see a chiropractor.
