Stuck In Neutral With a Problem? Surge Ahead

Ever feel like you are stuck in neutral and desperately need to move forward?  Too many or too difficult a challenge can do that to you. You have the best of intentions and real determination, but achieving success is just not happening. If you are used to working hard and getting results, this may be maddening. 

Before you give up, give yourself credit for all of the progress that you have made and then make your move. 

Decide What's Bugging You 

You may be dealing with difficult people, health problems, finances, family issues, or challenges at work. Whatever the frustration, here are some ways to make a breakthrough from Samantha Boardman, MD in MindBodyGreen.com. 

Start With the Obstacles - Often, we think staying positive helps, but mental health experts say positivity does not always fix "intention/action gaps." Instead, focus on what is standing in your way and find creative solutions within that obstacle. Ask yourself how you can work around the hardships to reach your goals. 

Pinpoint the goal - Ask yourself what your main wish is. You may want to move a big project forward, improve finances, or upgrade your health. Jot down your thoughts, take some time to consider them, and then clearly state your wish. 

The ask what the results would be - If your wish happened, picture the new situation. Depending on the wish, the results could look like this. 

  • You could relax and enjoy the final results of a major project that is all done 
  • You could spend less time budgeting and just enjoy life, if you realigned finances 
  • You could do more and feel better, if you ate better and exercised more 

Work on the obstacle - Now go directly to the problem and list ways to get around the obstacle.  

  • If it's a big project you might break it into more manageable parts and get some help 
  • If it's finances, you might set up a budget with a built-in savings plan and monthly reviews 
  • If it's your health, you might schedule daily exercises and shop at a local farmers market 

Come Up With a Plan of Attack

After trying several approaches you might outline an overall plan of attack for your project, finances or health. Write out all of the details, share it with family or close friends to enlist their support and post it where you will see it. 

Whatever you do, all of your thought, discussions and focused actions may be moving you ahead. If so, keep right on going and look over your shoulder to see how much progress you have made!
