Strange Ways You Can Injure Your Back
By Sara Butler
There are all kinds of weird and strange things that can happen over the course of the average person’s life, and you can almost be guaranteed that your chiropractor has heard their fair share of strange stories involving back injuries. They can’t share them with you, of course, but in the interest of education, here are a few of the very strange ways in which people can, and have, injured their backs!
Constipation
Being constipated is no fun, and it can be downright dangerous for your back! There are a variety of reasons for constipation, but if you’re in the bathroom trying your darnedest to get something going, all that straining and stressing can involve your back muscles and lead you to a back injury.
The best way to avoid this and having to explain it to your chiropractor is to stop constipation before it starts. Drink plenty of fluids, exercise, eat right and if you’re taking medication that may cause constipation be extra diligent in your pursuit of staying hydrated.
Hula Hooping
Hula hooping is a great way to stay in shape, and it’s becoming really popular all over the United States -- again. There is a dark side to hula hooping, though. If you buy a cheap hula hoop that doesn’t fit your body right (the hoop should reach your hip if you put it on the ground beside you) it can lead to painful muscle spasms in your back, sciatica and even slipped discs. So, make sure you learn to hula hoop the right way!
Shoelace Tying
Who would have thought tying your shoelaces could be so fraught with danger? Everyday activities such as shoe tying, baby lifting, gardening, and even shaving your legs can result in a back injury. Anything that requires you to bend over can cause a muscle spasm in your back that can bring you down. These injuries always have the chance to develop into a chronic condition, so if something happens you need to make sure to see your chiropractor as soon as you can so they can help your injury to heal and to make sure you do what you need to in order to ensure you don’t get hurt from it again.
You may be surprised by some of the seemingly innocuous things on this list, but it just goes to show there is danger around every corner! Take care of your back and make sure to see your chiropractor regularly!
