Chiropractic: A Fountain of Youth

By Sara Butler

There’s no literal fountain of youth out there (bummer!) but that doesn’t mean you have to just go gently into that goodnight and accept an aging body. There are things you can do right now that can keep you feeling good and to keep you healthy as you age. Try incorporating a few of these things, including chiropractic care, into your routine to help keep your body young!

Chiropractic Care

Regular chiropractic care provides a surplus of benefits to your health, but some very specific benefits for an aging body. When you see your chiropractor regularly it helps to improve your balance and helps to keep you moving. These are two very important things to keep on the table as you grow older since movement and flexibility are important keys to keeping age-related degeneration from taking its toll. Plus, increased balance aids you in avoiding falls that can become a big issue as you get older.

Energy is also a benefit of chiropractic care as you age. When your body is aligned and working at its best, you feel more energetic and it can even improve your mood!

Mental Exercise

If you want to keep your brain young, then you need to exercise it just as you would any other muscle. When you keep your mind occupied with crossword puzzles or Sudoku, then you are helping your brain form new connections between neurons – and those connections are important to memory and function.

Find Something You Love

As you grow older you seem to have more time to do the things you enjoy, so to stay young, remember to find something you’re passionate about and immerse yourself in it. Volunteer with an organization that is important to you or take up a new hobby that you’ve fallen in love with. Giving yourself a renewed purpose as you grow older and move away from things that have defined you before (career or children) is important to stay young by renewing your interests.

You Are What You Eat

Of course, your body is a temple and should be treated as such. In an effort to stay healthy and young, you should avoid excess sugar in your diet, eat more healthy fats and omega-3 fatty acids, and drink some green tea!

Sugar is actually quite stressful on your body, with no nutritional value. The omega-3 fatty acids in your diet help to reduce the visible effects of the aging process and also help to keep your bones strong. Green tea can help to keep your brain sharp and even help to manage and maintain a healthy weight – which is more difficult to do as you age!

If you have any questions about how to stay young in mind and body, ask your chiropractor the next time you’re at The Joint! They are a great resource.
